Hanging a Banner Across a Road or Precinct

Karen Griffin - Friday, March 23, 2018

Seen banners hanging above your precinct or local road?  Wondered  how they got there?

Banner across road or precinct

It certainly isn't the sort of thing you nip out after dark and do, is it?

Rules do vary between Local Authorities.  Some of them have the man-power to deal with this and see it rightly as a valuable income stream.  Balanced against that, is the need for that Authority to have the right equipment, knowledge and insurance to hang them safely.  Some of them even have very specific rules on the manufacture of these banners.  Not one from Vistaprint for sure. They usually have reinforced channels, through which chains or armoured rope hangs.

This does add to manufacturing costs, so the advice from us is to start at least six months in advance of your event.  Find a spot where banners are already used regularly. Much easier to deal with an Authority who already have a system in place.  Book your space, pay your money, and get a full specification for the banner manufacture.  It can still be a re-usable banner - you just need to send the spec to us and we can handle it from there.

Rules For Displaying Your Banner

Karen Griffin - Friday, March 16, 2018

Over the last couple of blogs we have been trying to work our way though the confusion of rules that apply to re-usable banners and boards used to advertise local events.

Government advise that, when vinyl advertising banners are used on Local Authority owned land, an advisory telephone call is made to the Grounds depot of your local Town or District authority first. This is so that staff can advise where and how to erect them safely.

The five golden rules are really just common sense:

● be kept clean and tidy

● be kept in a safe condition

● have the permission of the owner of the site on which they are displayed (this includes the Highway Authority if the sign is to be placed on highway land)

● not obscure, or hinder the interpretation of, official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport

● be removed carefully where so required by the planning authority

You can read the Government ruling in full here

Displaying Your Banner Roadside - Rules

Karen Griffin - Monday, March 12, 2018

The previous blog tackled the rules of displaying your re-usable banner across Highways Authority roads.

Today, we look at Local Government and their take on displaying banners roadside.  You have all seen them.  Hanging on railings near a mini roundabout, or outside the local superstores.  Flapping in the wind, out of date and generally looking tatty.  Is that your Authority?

They all have different rules, and some Authorities openly state they don't have the manpower to police roadside advertising, be it boards or banners.  Some delegate the authority to Parish Councils - all of whom are volunteers and some are more zealous than others.

Current Governmental advice is that banners  with a "total area of all such notices must not exceed 1.2 square metres in aggregate and no individual notice is to exceed 0.4 of a square metre. They may be displayed only for a period of six months in any year."

Roadside advertising banners

Now we know, from speaking to our customers, that often banners and boards are taken down much sooner than this. We all know of examples of much larger signs that have been around for years (and why do you need A level maths to work it out anyway!).

In any case, the Local Government Authority (that is District, Town or County Council) can serve a notice requesting that any signage be removed immediately.  These are usually followed up by threats of fines.

Remember, historic areas and sites of Special Scientific Interest need planning permission for every single piece of signage, temporary or otherwise.

There are five good pieces of advice in the next blog, to try to avoid this happening.

Road Side Advertising Rules for Banners

Karen Griffin - Wednesday, March 07, 2018

One of the most common question posed by potential customers of our re-usable banners is that of permission.  Permission to display them roadside.

The general rule across the UK is that re-usable banners fall into the category of 'temporary signage'.  With the Landowner's permission, they can be displayed for up to 30 days before removal.

But what if the landowner is  The Highways Agency?  In England The Highways Agency has ownership of all the main arterial routes, mostly Motorways and A roads with double numbers after them.  They own the road, have responsibility for its upkeep, but they also own the pedestrian bridges that span their roads.  Just the bridges - the steps tend to be owned by the local authority.

So in the case of The Highways Agency, they NEVER give permission for banners to be hung on their bridges.  Which is why the only picture I could find was one from Canada!

Local Authority rules are a whole new blog!

It's a Railing Wrap

Karen Griffin - Friday, March 02, 2018

Regular readers will know how much we like new things.  So it was a bit of a surprise when a customer sent us a picture of a clever bit of advertising on railings.

railing wraps

A bit of research later, and we found there is really only one large company installing these at the moment.  A fresh new idea from America, not only is the design require a particular set of skills, the actual manufacture itself is a series of angled flats that clip over existing railings, creating a seemingly moving image as traffic moves alongside.

If you have actually seen this new type of advertising, please send pictures. Would love to learn more about it.

Getting Trendy With Hoodies

Karen Griffin - Monday, February 26, 2018

The most popular item of personalised clothing we sell is the Hoodie.  We favour an American brand called AWDis - which stands for All We Do Is.  Don't they just love their acronyms!  We can get lots of different brands from Craghopper to Asquith & Fox, but AWDis stands out.

It washes really well.  The colours don't fade. The fit is really true to expectations.  There are a number of styles. We love the range of two-tone ones.  And at just £27 per hoodie, including your personalisation, they are an absolute bargain.  Don't forget you can order any number you like, including just one!

But what are those loops for? Click the image to find out!

It might be getting noticeably lighter in the evenings, but it is still the depths of winter despite the odd brave daffodil shining yellow against the gloom.

We work outside less these days, but we still love our personalised coats.  In fact we even wear them in the workshop when its a bit chilly first thing, as you can see in this video.

This is just one of a wide range of jackets we can offer.  Starting from just £45,including the personalisation (glitter vinyl not compulsory!).

Just quality personalised products with a guarantee.

In Praise of Window Cling

Karen Griffin - Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Who would  have thought there is a hot new advertising idea around?

One that is easy, low cost and brilliantly effective?

Remember the old car tax discs?  Used to stick on the passenger side front windscreen at the bottom corner?

Well since they were abolished in October 2014, it seems we haven't fallen out of love with the nostalgic idea of having something in that corner.  And neither has the law been changed to prevent you from displaying something of a similar size on your windscreen.

Window cling adheres to glass using static, so no horrid adhesive marks - so it makes an ideal 'replacement' tax disc for your customers to display membership of your organisation, or an association badge.

So are you missing an advertising trick?  Starting at £75 for a 100 off run of window cling discs at 120mm to a design of your choice, they do make a cost effective 'free gift' to your customers.  A personalised 'badge of honour' which might just start to spread interest in your business locally.

Glass manifestations

Karen Griffin - Friday, February 09, 2018

Not often we come across a new word here, especially one that relates to our industry.  But twice in one week, we have been asked for Glass Manifestations.

Manifestations are usually "two rows of 50mm or 75mm white or frosted dots on the glass at heights of 1500mm and 800mm from the floor. As long as the sizes and height positions of the manifestations are inline with these guidelines any shapes including company logos will satisfy this health and safety requirement."

Yes, that is the 2000 Building Regulations definition.

What it basically means is that any building which has access by the public HAS to have some sort of marking on full length windows.  So this covers all business premises, public buildings and even your own house if you let it under the 'rent a room' scheme or on Airbnb.  The fines promised are, as usual, fairly eye watering.

To be honest though, we have graphics on our window just to remind the dopey dog not to brain himself when distracted by birds.

We can sell the etch designs which are semi permanent, but if you are looking for something totally removable, consider window cling.  Works on static, so you can take them off with no residue if you need to.  They look really pretty. And of course they will provide hours and hours of endless fun for little ones.

A Virtual Shopping Store

Karen Griffin - Tuesday, February 06, 2018

How is that possible?  In Korea it is apparently a reality.

But how far away are we from that here?  Amongst friends, I am legendary in my dislike of shopping.  Amazon is my best friend.  If it cannot be bought on it, I really don't need it that bad.

Except of course food.  And this Christmas I missed the last delivery slot so found myself in Sainsbury's.  Not being a habitual store shopper, I started at one end and worked my way up and down until I came to a bank of touch screens.  Yes, it was an Argos outlet, re-sited in a food store.  And guess what?  I could purchase anything I wanted on these touch screens, pay for it, and it was ready for me to collect in the time it took me to negotiate the fresh food and diary aisles.

Incredible.  Blinkin' marvellous in fact.

On-line shopping with instant delivery made easy.

But is this a good thing, in this world of Amazon Prime? Well, it would certainly suit the I-want-it-now brigade  And there were nice people to help those not so sure about touch screen technology.  A type of fusion between the world of actual store and on line retail, I guess.

But of course no one actual bricks-and-mortar store can physically stock everything immediately to the quantities that might be called on.

In my humble view, online shopping is here to stay and 2018 is going to be the year that it is more widely accepted by all walks of society for all types of product.  This is just one of the reasons why we have taken Griffin Designs firmly into the world of personalised mail order vinyl graphics.  It is not exactly the sort of product that you can pop down to the local store to buy.  And Mr Google is being very kind to us, at the moment.

So if you need a winter coat for the cooler weather, don't pop down to Sainsbury's, email us for a coat with your business name on the back.  Something unique and mail order.  Not just a coat.  An advertisement on your back!
